Providence St. Joseph Health is calling for a VP of Strategic Planning and Portfolio Management to be located in Renton, Washington.


The Vice President of Strategic Planning & Portfolio Management (SPPM) reports to the Chief Strategy Officer for PSJH. SPPM is one of three business units within the Division of Strategic Services. The SPPM team is responsible for the development, adoption, and monitoring of PSJH's Integrated Strategic and Financial Plan as presented by the Executive team and approved by the Board of Trustees. In addition the VP oversees the team responsible for developing and leading the implementation of strategic initiatives directly related to the successful execution of the Strategic and Financial Plan. The VP actively participates in the prioritization of key initiatives so that the right projects and programs are implemented at the appropriate pace and scale. In addition, this team manages the Certificate of Need process and Capital Planning process for the enterprise working closely with Regional Chief Executives, Line of Business leaders, Shared Services leaders, including the Finance Division. The successful candidate will be able to establish relationships with key leaders across the entire enterprise in order to gather the input required to develop and maintain the Integrated Strategic and Financial Plan and ensure priority initiatives and strategies are appropriately resourced with project management support.

Key Responsibilities:

In this position, the VP, Strategic Partnership & Integration will be accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Leads the team responsible for strategic planning & metric performance, which includes the development of the planning process and workflows required to collect and audit information required to monitor the successful achievement of the goals and objectives outlined inthe ISFP.

  • Works with the EVP/CSO to design a strategic planning process that engages the Board, Executive Leadership, and caregivers at the system and regional level as PSJH approaches the final years of its current ISFP.The VP will be actively involved in the creation of the next 3-5 year plan.

  • Responsible for strategic execution of key initiatives through the management of the team responsible for portfolio and project management services. k

  • Leads key strategy sessions with internal stakeholders responsible for key projects within the portfolio being managed by the team and assists the EVP/CSO in supporting the Regional Chief Strategy Officers with their planning processes and key initiatives.

  • Serves as a resource to the executive leadership team and core leaders responsible for managing highly visible, complex projects.

  • Supports the team in the development of a resource prioritization project when the need for support exceeds the PM resources available.

  • Serves as a special expert and brings knowledge of best practices in planning and resource allocation to the strategic services division and key stakeholders while initiating the implementation of process improvements as needed.

  • Responsible for informing leadership of issues, concerns, and risks to successful implementation of the plan or delays/challenges in achieving the defined metric targets.

  • Provides Strategic Thought Leadership to the EVP/CSO on strategy, planning and portfolio management.

  • Leads an analytics team that supports the development of key metrics and targets and serves as internal consultants to divisions and departmental teams across the system during the planning process.

Management Responsibility

  • Manages a team of direct reports including Executive Directors, Directors, Program Managers, and Analyst

  • In partnership with the EVP and entire management team establishes performance metrics and holds team accountable for achieving individual and organizational goals.

  • Works with team to identify and resolve issues and problems affecting their area and provides them with counsel, guidance, and direction as appropriate.

  • Behaves in a manner consistent with PSJH policies and promotes the mission and values of PSJH

  • Establishes success indicators and objectives consistent with the divisional leadership and in support of the Providence Mission.

  • Develops and manages an operating budget as appropriate.

  • Manages direct reports in an effective and motivating manner.

  • Selects, motivates and develops key senior management personnel within areas of responsibility.

  • Works with the executive leadership and legal department to assure operating divisions are in compliance with all applicable laws and governing agencies.

  • Works as a team member with the executive leadership team and other core leaders and provides leadership as needed across the enterprise.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required qualifications for this position include:


Graduate degree required. Master’s degree or doctoral equivalent preferred in a relevant field such as business administration, health care administration, public health, or social, medical, or biomedical science.


A minimum of 7 years of experience with strategic planning and portfolio management in health or social services agency, non-profit or mission driven organization. A minimum of 7 years of leadership or management experience consistent with the duties described. A minimum of 7 years of experience leading large organizational change across multiple functional departments in a matrixed organization of the size and scale of Providence St. Joseph Health.

  • Strong capabilities to establish and maintain relationships with a variety of business and health care executives on multiple levels.

  • Exceptional ability to engage senior leadership and others across single and multi-faceted organizational structures to create and cultivate new partnerships.

  • Individual will have a strong financial acumen understanding critical health care financial metrics and accounting principles including income statements, cash flows and balance sheet drivers.

  • Must possess a high level of creativity and problem-solving skills to identify innovative and appropriate approaches to business issues related to running a multi-faceted corporation with a diversity of companies affiliated with it.

  • Ability to persuasively present recommendations/decisions with tact, diplomacy and confidence.

  • Excellent interpersonal sensing, communication and relationship building skills and the ability to build a high-performance team.

  • Extremely capable at managing multiple issues/project simultaneously while maintain the ability to handle urgent and emergent needs as they arise.
