Providence Health & Services Principal BI Developer in Renton, Washington


Providence is calling an Principal BI Developer to one of our location in Oregon, Washington, or California.

We are seeking a Principal BI Developer who will serve as the senior development role in the department accountable for leading the development of data visualization implementation and tooling across the various and evolving software platforms leveraged by Healthcare Intelligence (HI), and will partner with the other Principal Development resources to ensure proper visualization tools are leveraged depending upon customer requirements. This position will provide best practice guidance and mentorship in identifying the most appropriate data visualization toolsets and partner with other HI resources to drive the development of optimal data visualization solutions to meet HI customer needs. This role will be accountable for the effective execution and delivery of data visualization development efforts and solutions across the HI product and software suite. This role must have a deep understanding of presentation layer objects like interactive reports, scorecards, and dashboards across different software solutions, including Power BI, Tableau, WEBI, Lumira, and others to support best practice semantic layer development to ensure alignment of development efforts to meet visualization requirements. This position should stay abreast of the latest data visualization tools in the marketplace and ensure HI continues to leverage the best data visualization capabilities possible based upon customer needs.

In this position you will:

  • Provide strategic oversight for data visualization development efforts in Healthcare Intelligence. Maintain a high level of fluency in data delivery tools and techniques to ensure that the best visualization solutions are being leveraged for information delivery. In collaboration with other HI development efforts, provide guidance that semantic layer development is done in accordance with data visualization requirements. Translate from functional requirements to technical specifications as it relates to data visualization.

  • Work closely with the end user to define requirements, understanding what is needed to answer the business question (which may be different from what is asked). Demonstrate an open willingness to listen and learn clinical or business needs, then develop data visualization solutions of excellent quality (as measured by performance, data integrity, following HI coding standards). These solutions should be intuitive to use and also able to answer a broad set of questions.

  • Design, Model, Develop, and deploy HI data visualization and information delivery solutions utilizing tools including Power BI, Tableau, SAP Business Objects, and other tools as the HI solution set evolves.

  • Demonstrate deep understanding of the technical aspects of applications and integrated tools, as well as client/server and host-based systems and the data visualization implications. Demonstrate deep understanding of all aspects of design, development an testing and best practices of data visualization development.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance across the HI analyst and development team as it relates to the development and implementation of data visualization and information delivery solutions.

  • Communicate and escalate major issues promptly to management, HI leadership, team members, customers as appropriate.

  • Resolve production problems and issues through root cause analysis, data investigation, QA and testing.


Required qualifications:

  • ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Services, Public Health, Business Management

  • More than 10 years Relational databases, SQL experience

  • 8 years Data Visualization software development/delivery experience

  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to elicit, analyze and communicate business requirements from multiple customers.

  • Proven experience of being a self motivator, delivering thought leadership, and taking the initiative for operational excellence.

  • Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Public Health, Business Management, Information Services.

  • Hospital Billing expertise or Accounting

  • SQL Expertise – 5 year

  • Knowledge of Azure cloud/Snowflake.

  • Previous experience leading teams
