THE ROLE

The Group Vice President of Research is the operations leader driving the Providence Research organization in advancing health with breakthrough research and personalized care to empower patients to live their best lives. The Providence Research Network is the vehicle we use to accelerate these breakthrough discoveries . It is the collective people, process, resources and infrastructure connecting and unifying Providence’s research efforts. The position can be located in Renton, Seattle, Los Angeles, or Portland.

The GVP Providence Research is the Chief Operating Officer of the Providence Research Network and is structured in a Clinical-Operator dyad management model in support of the Senior Vice President of Providence Research. This role is accountable for the operation metrics, system research infrastructure and the reputation building of Providence Research network inside and outside the organization. Research is a critical team within the Clinical Care organization working across the clinical institutes, analytics, population health and physician enterprises.

Research is imperative to the future of Providence and Providence Research is from bench to bedside and beyond. This position will manage and scale the capabilities of the research team through an open and collaborative mindset working closely to support and grow clinical and scientific investigators while also building consistency, transparency and efficiency in operations and infrastructure.

The local and regional operating models for Research are evolving and 2020 has been a transformative year in advancing the system approach to research. This position will be instrumental in creating the structure and process by which to manage and collaborate across the system and represent at leadership committees and councils.

This senior role manages matrixed teams of administrative directors, clinical investigators, scientists, and research professionals with three primary teams: IRB, Office of Research Administration & Health Services Research. The role partners with leaders of other departments to address complexities and challenges of research operations, such as financial management, value measurement, protected time for investigators, funding, philanthropy, data management, regulatory requirements, communication, research education and workforce development. It synchronizes with work occurring in the Health Insights, Analytics and Genomics Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The incumbent will be accountable for the following:

  • KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Ensure patient safety and the highest quality of research

  • Lead, execute and evolve the implementation of system-level strategic plan for research

  • Support research collaboration and leadership across the system

  • Optimize, improve and evolve research infrastructure for Providence Research Network

  • Simplify access for patients to advanced therapies

  • Contribute to the collaborative execution of prioritized Institute Research (Cancer, Heart, Neuro)

  • Strengthen funding for scientific projects or programs

  • Communicate results with senior leadership and across the organization

  • Other duties as assigned by Senior Vice President, Providence Research Network

  • This position may require travel across Providence and other locations for interacting with the broader scientific community, and otherwise as useful to the duties of the position

  • LEADERSHIP, STRATEGY AND OPERATIONS

  • Demonstrate the Providence mission, vision, and core values in leadership behaviors, practices, and decisions, and inspire researchers, scientists and other caregivers – to reflect the same.

  • Lead the development of process innovation and improvement across research operations – in the context of Providence’s broader Clinical Care organization and patient experience vision.

  • Provide consistent visibility to Providence Research Network work in system strategic planning, priority-setting, and decision-making in support of the system's goals, strategy, and vision.

  • Provide operational leadership and support for end-to-end Research business, including developing forums and systems for researchers, investigators and staff to collaborate, encourage innovation, transfer knowledge, and recognize best evidence-based clinical practice and research (Example includes Providence COVID Research Symposium held in June 2020).

  • Contribute to the development of an information services (technology) plan to complement the system strategic plan, and participate in ongoing oversight of research information technology.

  • Serve as a consulting resource to ministries on research projects and opportunities, as well as clinical trial program management and research funding and philanthropy.

  • Broker essential knowledge transfer across ministries and regions on topics related to research operations such that regions are organized to support two-way communications.

  • Manage the Health Services Research council including the intake, evaluation, tracking and reporting of projects and initiatives.

  • With other system executives, contribute to advancing priority initiatives across the system.

  • Represent Providence in national and international Research related healthcare affairs, and networks on behalf of Providence to bring studies, projects and expertise from external organizations to Providence.

  • Work collaboratively with system marketing/public relations leadership on reputation for Providence Research Network, including setting guidelines for crediting Providence Research Network in publications, marketing and media relations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required education/experience for this position include:

  • M.B.A. or equivalent level of post-graduate education in business, healthcare administration, operations or finance.

  • At least 10 years of experience as a business, research or physician leader.

  • At least 10 years of experience leading interdisciplinary teams within a large multi-facility, broad geography health system – in a consulting capacity also acceptable.

  • Experience in academic, clinical and corporate cultures.

  • Knowledge of running clinical, bench and translational research.

  • Familiarity with operations at Providence St. Joseph Health.

  • Experience in leading large-scale projects, building large-scale collaborations, and have substantial leadership and management experience.

  • Effective written, verbal communication skills including presentation skills.

  • Strong strategic and planning skills, attention to detail, and ability to solve complex problems.

  • Strong knowledge of medical and clinical research terminology.

  • High level of proficiency with MS Office products including Outlook, Word, and Access.

Preferred education/experience for this position include:

  • Ph.D. or M.D. degree.
