Providence St. Joseph Health is calling an Executive Director of Mission Assessment and Innovation - PSJH to our location in Renton, WA.

We are seeking an Executive Director of Mission Assessment and Innovation to be responsible for providing assessment/evaluation, program management, strategic project management, analysis, and strategic decision-making support to Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) senior Mission executives. This position partners with the EVP of Mission to manage Mission strategy from concept phase through transition to operations of large, complex, essential, and cross-regional system initiatives and related projects. This position fills a key position as a partner to senior executives, flexibly responding to needs and enhancing the internal capability within the Mission department to develop and drive change.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Leads the development and implementation of the Mission/Catholic Identity Assessment process. Analyzes the results and works with Mission and operational leaders to develop and implement improvement plans.

  • Works with internal and external leaders to build a process for developing, evaluating, and implementing Mission-focused innovation ideas. Coordinates with internal project and operational teams to launch pilots. Documents and shares results and lessons learned. Leads the spread of successful pilots, as appropriate, across the organization.

  • Oversees the development of project documents including charters, objectives and metrics, action plans, stakeholder engagement plans, and monitoring systems.

  • Works to identify, implement, and monitor Mission strategic initiatives, projects, success indicators, and goals by working with PSJH Mission leaders.

  • Leads development of executive Mission projects/initiatives from concept phase through transition to operations using combination of analytical, project management, change management, facilitation, and business management expertise. Ensures tracking of financial, human, and technical objectives for each project. Provides project status reporting to executive sponsor, initiative owner, project team, and other stakeholders as requested. Develops project-specific escalation and issue management protocols.

  • Engages stakeholders in solving problems. Utilizes change management and performance improvement tools. Builds awareness and commitment to the change effort and leads the ongoing communications and alignment of stakeholders throughout the process. Conducts post-initiative assessments and makes recommendations for improvement based on those assessments.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s Degree in Mission integration, theology, organizational development and change leadership, education, program development, project management or a related field of ministry.

  • 3 to 5 years of increasing health care and project management, planning, development, implementation and evaluation.

  • Working understanding of the Catholic Church and its traditions.

  • Understanding Catholic identity of an organization through Catholic social teachings.

  • Demonstrates maturity, judgment, and leadership to be an effective and trusted contributor and colleague to the Ministry leader and leadership team to inspire and influence others in pursuit of the goals of the ministry of PSJH.

  • Demonstrated competence in collaborative processes, change management and culture change, group facilitation, verbal and written communication, and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • Must demonstrate skills and experience in strategic thinking, health care operations and program/project management.

  • Strong strategy, planning and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple, concurrently running projects and adapt to changing deadlines, competing priorities and unexpected assignments.

  • Ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.

  • Understanding the principles and practices of adult learning.

  • The individual must have excellent group facilitation and communication skills and the ability to foster community in an environment of trust.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated leadership experience in fostering commitment to supporting and promoting the Catholic identity of the organization.

  • The individual should exhibit creativity, and demonstrate the flexibility needed to enjoy the start-up phases of a complex project.

  • The individual must have above average organizational skills and be self-directed.

  • The individual must have excellent relational skills and must give evidence of effective personal integration of spiritually-centered, values-based leadership. He/she must be willing to foster learning consistent with the frameworks and source documents that inform leadership in PSJH and Catholic healthcare. The individual must show evidence of a balanced approach to spiritual, theological and ethical reflection.

  • Able to engage individuals from diverse religious backgrounds in understanding and appreciating their role as leaders of a Catholic ministry while honoring their own religious or spiritual traditions.

  • Demonstrates personal and interpersonal qualities that engender confidence, trust, and credibility among peers, caregivers, medical staff, volunteers, patients, and community citizens.

  • Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles.

  • Must be able to travel to the various PSJH facilities and regions as needed.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Certification for project management.
