Providence St. Joseph Health is calling an Executive Director of Absence Management to Providence St. Joseph Health Shared Services in Renton, WA

The Executive Director, Absence Management and Work/Life Programs is responsible for providing strategic direction and executing key system-wide programs and tactics for the PSJH (system-wide) Absence Management program which includes leave of absence and disability management, return-to-work and accommodations programs, paid leave design, workers’ compensation and injury prevention & ergonomics teams.

Under the executive director’s leadership, the programs will identify and implement innovative strategies for creating an environment where caregivers (employees) are protected from workplace injuries, necessary leaves are managed with care and paid leave programs support our diverse workforce. The leader will be expected to manage relationships across all seven states that PSJH serves while overseeing programs that impact over 114,000 caregivers for each of our family of brands. With healthcare changing rapidly and the rules and laws impacting leaves continuing to expand, the executive director will need to remain a subject matter expert along with the ability to operationalize programs that can deliver an improved experience to our stakeholders.

In this position you will:

  • Serve as a supportive and inspiring people manager that develops the leader's direct reports, creates team metrics and goals and is accountable for their results.

  • Incorporate customer feedback while developing a three year strategic roadmap to create an industry-leading program and further align the Absence and Disability Management, Workers’ Compensation and Injury Prevention & Ergonomic teams.

  • Effective at understanding operations of absence and disability management programs and leading the organization's return-to-work and accommodations program that supports both non-occupational and occupational leaves while supporting caregivers as they return to light-duty and reduce lost work days.

  • Partner with HR stakeholders (i.e. CHROs, HR Directors, Labor and Employment Counsel) to help implement paid-leave program changes that can create alignment and equity.

  • Strong at public speaking in order to serve as a visible leader for the absence management program within the organization (frequent presentations expected to HR stakeholders, core leaders, executives and other stakeholders, i.e. labor unions)

  • Identify and report key metrics (e.g., measurable outcomes, quality of services, injury rates, claims data, costs)

  • Provide oversight and guidance on program development to ensure regulatory compliance with federal, state, city or other applicable leave laws.

  • Serve as a visible leader that works to share knowledge and reduce confusion across HR with regard to leave administration so as to improve customer satisfaction.

  • Strong financial acumen that evaluates financial impact of various paid-leave programs along with oversight of the workers’ compensation budget tracking and cost management.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Clinical (Nursing) or Liberal Arts is required.

  • More than 10 years of leadership experience and/or people management is required.

  • Twelve or more years of closely related experience with employee benefits and/or absence management programs (e.g. leave of absence, paid leave programs, workers’ compensation claims management and/or disability programs) is required.

  • Knowledge of financial principles and practices and the ability to apply them effectively.

  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations; live, via online or virtual mediums.

  • Demonstrates excellent judgment and decision making skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated skills in project plan design and implementation; directing projects, coordinating the work of operational teams, and managing project budgets.

  • Ability to develop relationships and secure trust to influence and garner support for recommended programs and services.

  • Ability to demonstrate return on investment or cost benefit analyses of proposed services or programs; ability to identify ideas for program savings and improved efficiencies.

  • Familiarity with leave laws and understanding their impact on paid leave and other leave of absence programs.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • SPHR License preferred.

  • CEBS or other recognized program certification preferred.
