Providence Chief Executive Officer, Providence Health Plan in Renton, Washington
The Chief Executive Officer of Providence Health Plan (PHP), which is a division of Providence, is responsible for providing leadership toward the achievement of PHP’s mission, vision, strategic and P&L goals, and objectives. This position has full profit and loss accountability for all business lines, including those related to Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid. In addition to serving as the Chief Executive Officer of PHP, this key leader will also play a vital role on the Providence Population Health leadership team and contribute to payer-related strategies across the system.
At the health plan level, this leader will be responsible for the growth and successful operations of the PHP division of Providence, including development and execution of strategic plans, successful introduction of new programs and services, membership growth, operational, financial, and service excellence, and continued improvements in clinical quality.
This individual will become familiar with the established vision, mission, and strategies of PHP and will build on these in order to effectively define, articulate, and address current and future needs of the organization and the plan’s role within Providence.
The Chief Executive Officer of Providence Health Plan reports to the President of Population Health Management/Chief Executive Officer of Ayin Health Solutions of Providence, and the health plan Board of Directors.
PHP and Providence are mission-driven organizations. This key leader must understand that the financial goals of the health plan are pursued in service of the organization’s mission.
PHP and Providence’s future is based on re-thinking the business of healthcare. The new leader must have a passion for the continued transformation and be a forward thinker rather than one who seeks to lead a traditional health plan. Innovation and the ability to see and think about healthcare differently while creating new strategies and tactics will be critical to success.
This leader must have a passion for the importance of healthcare and build a high degree of credibility and strong working relationships with the Providence leadership team and provider community. This individual must take proactive steps to be known and accepted by physicians, hospital executives, and other caregivers.
The successful candidate will build effective give-and-take relationships throughout the organization by understanding the agendas and perspectives of others and knowing how to strike a balance that serves the broader interests of the system.
It is critical that the selected candidate understands the importance and interconnectedness of PHP and Providence with the communities served. S/he will need to represent PHP and Providence and build relationships with board members and community and civic leaders, leveraging his/her contacts to make decisions, solve problems, obtain information, and contribute to the community’s well-being.
The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Business Administration, Finance, or a related field with an advanced degree highly preferred.
This individual will have a proven track record of exemplary leadership experience in the healthcare industry with an in-depth knowledge and experience in a managed care and/or risk-bearing healthcare delivery environment. This experience will include a minimum of five years of senior management experience with profit and loss accountability. In addition to experience in managed care, it is important for this person to have experience working with multiple healthcare delivery models to ensure a broad knowledge of the managed care industry, operations, and finance.
The chosen executive will have demonstrated leadership capacity to assume oversight and accountability for the operations of a growing company and the ability to lead and motivate people to achieve agreed-upon results. In addition, this individual will have the ability to think strategically and will possess effective communication skills along with a proven track record of building and maintaining multiple successful partnerships and leading organizations through teamwork and collaboration.
The candidate should have prior leadership experience within a complex payer or provider organization and possess outstanding facilitation, negotiation, and consensus-building skills. S/he should be able to balance the business of healthcare with the delivery of healthcare and have the ability to build and maintain relationships with the provider and physician communities.
This executive needs to have demonstrated experience in product innovation, developing creative solutions to problems, building partnerships, and success in launching new products or entering new markets. S/he should have a proven track record of executing business plans that result in strategic success. The candidate will also possess demonstrated experience in building relationships with physicians and an understanding that the provider is a partner.
