This position exists to lead, direct, and facilitate the design and fulfillment of senior executive leadership formation programs so that “leaders and all caregivers of Providence are inspired by the heritage and the Catholic tradition entrusted to us by the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, integrating our Mission and core values into all aspects of our ministry.”

As an integral and executive member of the Providence Formation Institute, this position is accountable to formalize and lead strategic and transformation objectives for senior executive ministry leadership formation and other assigned formation programs under the direction of the Senior Vice President, Ministry Leadership Formation. The position is located in Renton, WA.


Successful accomplishment of the primary accountabilities of the position depends on establishing and maintaining positive, collaborative, and productive working relationships with a variety of persons, including: senior executive teams and/or councils, formation program participants; Formation Institute staff, and faculty; leaders and caregivers at all levels; functional stakeholders across Providence; and external partners.


With the Senior Vice President, Ministry Leadership Formation, and aligned with the overall formation intention and strategy, the AVP: establishes and fulfills the strategic plan for senior leader formation programs for Providence which sustain and strengthen the ministry, Mission, core values, heritage and culture of Providence for generations to come. Principally, the AVP:

  • In collaboration with the SVP and Formation Institute team, establishes, directs, and is responsible for all aspects of assigned senior leader and other formation programs, including: strategic planning, program and curriculum design, program implementation and administration, adherence to established Formation Standards of Excellence, evaluation and improvement, innovation, resource development, coordination of facilitators and faculty, logistics and planning of sessions and events, communication with leadership teams, key stakeholders, participants and presenters.

  • Serves as the Principal for assigned formation programs.

  • Designs, leads and/or participates in enterprise-wide formation-related initiatives with Mission leaders, executives, internal partners, and key stakeholders to advance formative conversation and integrate Mission and core values into system-wide efforts.

  • Provides leadership for and directs the development and delivery (as assigned) of a structured, relevant and innovative ongoing formation program for Providence leaders who have completed initial formation.

  • Supports and enhances the participant experience through cohort-specific effective, interactive formation resource components using electronic/online platforms.

  • Serves as an integral member of the Formation Institute team, supporting the overall administration and execution of our formation strategy, objectives, and formation efforts across Providence and our affiliates. As a team member, actively contributes to resource and program development and enhancements, seeks innovative solutions to design challenges, works diligently to improve the participant experience, readily shares expertise to enrich others, and promotes a collaborative and respectful team environment.

  • Serves as executive consultant and/or subject matter expert to assigned functional area leaders/programs (e.g. talent development, human resources, etc.) in helping to align formation efforts with other leadership development programs or initiatives for specified audiences (physicians, Mission leaders, caregivers, nursing, etc.).

  • As assigned, participates as a resource to the development, delivery, and strengthening of Formation Institute sponsored and/or locally-delivered formation initiatives.



Required experience/education for this position include:

  • Graduate-level degree in theology (MA, MDiv, MHCM, Spirituality, or similar degree.

  • 10-15 years of senior leadership with strategic work relating to the efforts of forming leaders in Catholic healthcare.

  • Demonstrated thought leadership in the arena of Catholic healthcare leadership formation, especially with respect to senior leader formation.

  • Five to seven years of experience leading Catholic healthcare leadership formation programs is preferred, including experience leading formation programs for senior leaders.

  • Proven experience in effective and innovative formation program design, delivery, and evaluation is required, with particular emphasis on meeting the formation needs of executives.

  • Participation in a Catholic healthcare leadership formation program.

  • Experience managing and facilitating nuanced group learning and group process.

Other qualifications or attributes include:

  • Practicing member of the Catholic faith is preferred.

  • Maturity, professionalism, and the ability to engage and work with diverse groups in a highly credible manner, especially senior executives.

  • Ability to effectively engage in and contribute to the national/international dialogue on Catholic healthcare ministry leadership formation through publications, participation in professional or other consortia, and on assigned committees representing Providence.

  • Outstanding and proven organizational, interpersonal, facilitation and communication skills adapted to the needs of those being served are critical to the success of this position.

  • Familiarity with the theory and practice of spiritual direction.

  • Establishing and maintaining positive relationships, building trust, and collaborative engagement.

  • Excellent program administration and coordination skills, including development of work plans, event planning and execution, learning assessment and metrics, monitoring processes, resource management, short and long range planning.

  • Highly developed decision-making skills using common sense, analysis, experience, and good judgment.

  • At minimum, facility in using Microsoft PowerPoint, Outlook and Word is required.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Mission, values, and heritage of Providence St. Joseph Health and its affiliates.

  • Key personal attributes include integrity, trust, curiosity, openness, attentiveness, critical thinking, and committed to personal ongoing formation.

  • Ability to manage shifting and competing priorities, and to succeed and thrive in a fast-paced environment with multiple assignments and changing needs.

  • Unless otherwise noted, the ability to work an occasional flexible schedule (evenings and/or weekends) and periodic travel is required.
