Providence Health & Services Associate Vice President of Communication in Renton, Washington
Providence St. Joseph Health is seeking an AVP of Communication to to our system office in Renton, WA (Portland, OR and Irvine, CA are also potential options in terms of location).
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Chief Communication & External Affairs Officer for Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH), the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Communication will lead communication strategy and resulting initiatives in support of the Providence St. Joseph Health family of brands. The role oversees communication strategy and support for three lines of business; organization wide internal communication; and the operations function for the Communication department. As a member of the Communication senior leadership team, with internal customers who span the entire organization, the AVP of Communication will be responsible for co-owning, measuring, and improving favorable views of the Communication team’s effectiveness, strategic value, and customer service.
The AVP of Communication is responsible for driving knowledge of the PSJH Mission, vision, values, promise, heritage, and strategic plan among caregivers (employees) and the broader community, and for engaging caregivers across all geographies.
The AVP of Communication supervises the Executive Director who leads the Organizational Communication team that is responsible for managing internal communication programs, tools and channels, and for ensuring alignment in messaging strategies, strategic use of audience segmentation, and the effective internal delivery of information across the organization. In their role supervising the leader of the Organizational Communication team, the AVP of Communication will identify strategic opportunities to educate, inspire, and motivate our caregivers to be champions of the transformation we are leading of both our organization and the health care industry.
Lines of Business
The AVP of Communication supervises the two Executive Directors and a Director of Communication who lead teams that support three lines of business that operate across part or all of the seven-state PSJH health system—Physician Enterprise, Home & Community Care, and the Ambulatory Care Network. The lines of business, while some include facilities and ministries that date back to our founding, have been newly organized in service of our strategic growth plan. Some lines of business are embarking on revolutionary strategies and building new brands and operating models from the ground up. The lines of business require a visionary communication leader who can partner with the three senior executives who oversee them to develop communication strategies that further our objective to transform health care by making it more convenient, affordable, and accessible for all. The lines of business are central to the PSJH vision of Health for a Better World , and the communication support required by them will span a wide array of disciplines.
The AVP of Communication supervises the Manager, Communication Operations and oversees the Operations function for the entire Communication department, which includes accountability for budgets, reporting metrics against goals, interfacing with human resources, real estate, finance and other shared services, and various administrative duties at the direction of the SVP, Chief Communication & External Affairs Officer.
Key Working Relationships
Providence St. Joseph Health employs a highly matrixed organizational structure. The AVP of Communication must establish and sustain positive relationships at all levels of the organization – regionally and across the system – with the goal of fostering open communication, mutual trust, and collaboration on strategic priorities.
Advises executive leadership at the system level and across the Providence St. Joseph Health family of brands on key communication initiatives, driving strategy and providing solutions to complex issues.
Works in close partnership with peers on the Communication senior leadership team, the AVPs who oversee the National Communication and Social Strategy & Influencer teams.
Works in close partnership with Communication and other leaders to support teams in delivering results through innovative programs at the line-of-business, system and regional levels.
Leads the development of annual communication strategies and budgets, in partnership with the Communication leadership team; accountable for prudent stewardship of invested resources.
Works closely with Government & Public Affairs to establish relationships and partnering programs with local, state and federal government and business and community leaders.
Leads strategy and oversees planning and execution of multi-faceted efforts such as:
Organizational campaigns and initiatives
External communication campaigns and initiatives
Caregiver engagement initiatives
Public relations for PSJH’s lines of business (in partnership with National Communication, Social Strategy & Influencer, and regional leads)
Reputation management for PSJH’s lines of business (in partnership with National Communication, Social Strategy & Influencer, and regional leads)
Responsible for understanding and exemplifying the Mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of the organization, and translating them into effective annual and long-range communication strategies, programs and plans. Actively supports and incorporates Mission and core values into communication materials and in establishing key relationships on behalf of the organization.
Accountable for rolling out the organization’s vision of Health for a Better World .
Creates effective, consistent communication channels organization wide that support the delivery of brand strategy and organizational voice to internal audiences.
Promotes a high-performing team culture and brand promise for delivering superior customer service, the highest quality deliverables, exceptional results, and thought leadership.
Works across the department in all locations to measure and build team morale and increase the number of highly sustainably engaged caregivers serving in all roles and at all levels of seniority.
- Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, public/media relations or related field is required. A Master’s degree or equivalent is preferred.
Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in communication roles.
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working as part of a complex, geographically dispersed organization.
Minimum of seven (7) years of experience working with executives in a senior leadership role in communication.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in health care is strongly preferred.
Experience in communication related to not-for-profit and religious-based organizations is desirable.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to pass state/federal screening requirements for airline travel are required.
